Klar Barrierefrei / wcag

WCAG 2.1 / 2.2 AA · BFSG · EAA

Scan your site for
WCAG & BFSG compliance.

Klar Barrierefrei is an accessibility scanner that checks your website against WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 Level AA — the standard behind Germany's BFSG and the European Accessibility Act. Automated scans catch only part of all issues (studies range from about 30% to 57% depending on method); the rest are flagged for manual review, so you get an honest picture, not a false "100% compliant" badge.

How it works

Three steps, no sign-up, results in seconds.

  1. 01

    Enter a URL

Paste the address of any public page you want to check — a homepage, a checkout, a contact form.

  2. 02

    We scan it

We render the page and run the axe-core engine against it, testing dozens of WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 AA success criteria.

  3. 03

    Get a clear report

You get a 0–100 score, issues grouped by severity and WCAG criterion, and a count of what still needs manual review.

Honest about what a scanner can and can't do

Independent studies put automated detection somewhere between a third and just over half of WCAG issues — roughly 30% (industry consensus) to 57% (Deque's axe-core study), depending on method. The rest — whether alt text is meaningful, whether focus order makes sense, whether error messages are clear — needs a human. So instead of a green "100% compliant" badge, our report gives you an automated score and an explicit count of issues flagged for manual review. That's the honest picture the BFSG actually asks for.

We are not an overlay. We don't inject a widget that claims to fix your site on the fly — those are widely criticised and don't create conformance. We test your real pages and tell you what to change in your own code.

What the BFSG means for German SMBs

The Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) is Germany's implementation of the European Accessibility Act (EAA). Since 28 June 2025, many private-sector products and services — online shops, banking, ticketing, e-books, and the websites and apps that deliver them — must be accessible to people with disabilities.

In practice, "accessible" is defined by the harmonised European standard EN 301 549, which points to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. That is the exact target our scanner measures against (plus the newer 2.2 criteria). Micro-enterprises offering services — fewer than 10 staff and under €2m turnover — are exempt for some obligations, but the moment you sell to consumers online, it is worth checking where you stand.

Enforcement in Germany runs through the market surveillance authorities of the federal states, who can require fixes and, ultimately, levy fines or order a service withdrawn. The pragmatic first move is simple: scan a representative page, see the automated findings, and use them to scope the manual review that follows.

This is general information, not legal advice. For a binding assessment of your obligations, consult a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Does an automated scan make my site legally compliant?
No. Automated testing catches only part of WCAG issues — studies range from about 30% to 57% depending on method (for example Deque's axe-core study). The remaining issues — things like meaningful alt text, logical focus order, and clear language — need human judgement. Our report flags those for manual review rather than claiming full compliance.
What laws does this help with?
In Germany the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) implements the European Accessibility Act (EAA), effective 28 June 2025. It requires many private-sector websites and apps to meet accessibility standards based on WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Our scan measures your site against WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA success criteria.
Is this an accessibility overlay or widget?
No. We do not sell an overlay, a plugin, or a toolbar that claims to "fix" your site automatically. Those are widely criticised and do not make a site compliant. We test your real pages and tell you what to fix in your own code.
How much does it cost?
The single-page check is free and needs no account. Beyond that: an automated full-site report from €14 and monthly monitoring from €14 — fully automated and cheaper than the usual German tools. Pay by card at checkout; see the pricing page.
Which standard version do you test against?
WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 at Level AA. AA is the level referenced by the EAA/BFSG and by the EN 301 549 European standard, so it is the practical target for most German SMBs.
What do you actually check?
We run the axe-core engine against a rendered page: colour contrast, image alt text, form labels, link and button names, heading structure, ARIA misuse, landmark regions, and more — then group findings by severity and WCAG criterion.
